Working between notation software and a DAW can be an essential part of a modern composing workflow—but moving musical material back and forth between the two can sometimes be surprisingly tedious.
Today, we’re excited to introduce the MIDI Transfer Tool, a new tool available in the ScoringWorld public catalog that makes it much easier to move musical ideas between Sibelius and your DAW.
Whether you work with Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, or another DAW, the tool lets you transfer MIDI simply by dragging and dropping.
How It Works
The workflow is deliberately simple.
Start by selecting a passage in your Sibelius score and clicking the Stomp button.

The selected passage is loaded into the MIDI “chip.”

From there, simply drag and drop the MIDI chip into your DAW’s project or arrangement window.

That's it. Your selected musical passage is now available in your DAW, ready to be edited, orchestrated, produced, or developed further.

The workflow also works in the opposite direction.
You can drag and drop a MIDI region from Cubase, or a MIDI file exported from virtually any DAW, directly into the MIDI chip.

Next, select the bar in Sibelius where you want to paste the music and press the Stomp button.
The notes from your DAW are then transferred directly into your Sibelius score.

This makes it possible to move between composing, notation, orchestration, and production without repeatedly exporting files and manually rebuilding musical material.
The Story Behind the Tool
The MIDI Transfer Tool was created in collaboration with two young composers from the UK, James Mazzocchi and Eliot Rao.

They approached ScoringWorld through our Custom Tool Program with a specific problem: finding a smoother way to work between Sibelius and a DAW.
For composers who regularly move between notation and production, this is a common part of the creative process. An idea might begin in a DAW, be developed in notation software, and then return to the DAW for mock-up and production.
The goal of the tool was to make those transitions faster and more natural.
Some words from the collaborators
From James Mazzocchi:
“Developing the tool has massively improved my own workflow, allowing me to move between notation, orchestration and production much more efficiently and spend more time focusing on the creative side of composing.”
James Mazzocchi
Eliot Rao describes a similar experience:
“I like to write in Cubase and then re-write it in Sibelius, working out orchestration and instrumentation, among other things, but that was getting a little tedious for me.
Ever since this tool was made, I've been using it every time I open Cubase, and it has been wonderful!”
